Pictographic Chinese Calligraphy (16) Family - 父母子

The shell bone script for Father
A hand on the right (the fork alike) holds an ax (the top left vertical line), which means the labor working outside, normally is a father's role.

The current standard Chinese character for Father is

The bottom is the hand, the top is the ax which is changed to two separated dots, not like ax anymore.

The shell bone script for Mother is

A lady kneeling down with two arms across in front of her chest.

The shell bone script for Child is

a big head with two arms up.
Based on the above, I created my art "Family"

in which, Father, Mother, and Child stand together, a family picture.

I also modified the character Father from standard script, the two falling down strokes are inward now, more like a man who stands up firmly.

I intentionally drew the Child in smaller size to show the real ratio in comparison with his parents.

The shell bone script of Mother is a lady who kneels down because the low social status of woman in ancient time. I let her stand up which is the lady shape nowadays.

Pictographic Chinese Calligraphy (15) Line up - 队

Chinese simplified character for "Line up" is

The left part means "Ear", the right part (人) means "People". The character means a team of people, but there is only one person.

I modified it a little bit to better express its meaning.

A big ear on the left, there are many people lined up on the right, which is the real meaning of the character.

Pictographic Chinese Calligraphy (13) Mountain of flowers and fruits - 花果山

In the famous Chinese novel 《Pilgrimage to the West》, the Monkey King lived with many other monkeys in "Mountain of flowers and fruits". Chinese describe it as a paradise.

The Chinese for Mountain of flowers and fruit is 花果山。

花 is flower, its Big Seal script is

just like a flower.

果 is fluit, its Shell Bone script is

just like a fruit tree.

山 is mountain, its Shell Bone script is
just like a mountain.

In normal writing, people write the three characters up down, left to right, or right to left in same size. It is good. However, how about to change a little bit as following

Now the root of flower and fruit are in the mountain, they form a mountain of flower and fruit.

Pictographic Chinese Calligraphy (12) Beauty - 美女

Chinese translate Beauty as “美女”, beautiful lady.

美 means beautiful. The character of its Shell Bone script is

Which is combination of "sheep" on the top,

and a "big" on the bottom

Big Sheep is beautiful, ancient Chinese thought. Why? Possible big sheep means that you have more meat, or big sheep looks beautiful, or both.

Peking Opera has a type of headwear with long horn alike elastic whip on top.

Chinese believe that is beautiful.

The Shell Bone sccript of lady, or woman is

which is a lady kneels down with two arms across in front of the chest because the low social status of women in the ancient time, even before a few decades ago.

Here is my art work

on the left is 美 (beautiful) with long hair similar as Peking Opera headwear, and long legs; on the right is 女 (lady) who stands up with confidence and graceful posture because she is not in low social status anymore.

Pictographic Chinese Calligraphy (8) The frog in the well - 井底之蛙

"The frog in the well" is a famous Chinese proverb, which describes a person who is very limited outlook on the outside of world,  but doesn't know the fact that he is the kind person.

The Shell Bone script for Well is

The Small Seal script for Well is

The Small Seal script for Frog is

Here is my new calligraphy work: The frog in the well

The two dots in frog eyes were added by me to make it alive.

Pictographic Chinese Calligraphy (7) Where the water flows, a canal is formed - 水到渠成

Water in Shell Bone script is

four water drops on the sides of a curve, like an image of river. Ancient Chinese got water from the river.

The Chinese proverb says "Water drops form the river".

We see the image above, which is what ancient Chinese thought about water and river.

There is another Chinese proverb: When water flows, a river is formed.

Here is my art work:"Water and River"

All characters are Water of shell bone script, from small on the top to gradually bigger ones downward, which is similar to a river flowing from distance.

Pictographic Chinese Calligraphy (6) Rain Umbrella - 雨伞

Chinese character for Rain is 雨 (Song script or printing script)

The Big Seal script (more than 3000 years old script)

It has 4 drops, like raining. The ancient Chinese used the pictography for "Rain".

The character for Umbrella is 伞 (Song script or printing script) or 傘 (traditional Chinese).

No old script characters found. The character is very like an umbrella.

So 雨伞 means "rain umbrella". It is very pictography.

I modified it as following,

Put the Rain over the Umbrella, add extra drops, make it more picture alike and dynamic. It is a beautiful poetic picture now.

Pictographic Chinese Calligraphy (4) Dragon Boat - 龙舟

Dragon is a zodiac animal but the only unreal animal. No one knows how Dragon was created, I think that it should be from Dinosaur, big, ugly, powerful and king of the universal. So Emperors liked to sit on house with many dragon sculptures, and wore the clothes with dragon robes.

Dragon is important in the daily life of ordinary people, dragon boat race is famous not only in China, but in the world. I am not going to say the history of dragon boat race, you can find on website easily. I want to tell you the related calligraphy with dragon boat.

Character of dragon in old Small Seal script

On the left, it is the head and body of dragon, on the right is the hair of the body and the tail of dragon.

Dragon character in Clerical script:
It is similar as the character in Small Seal script. But more stright lines, less curved lines, are more standardized, which meet the requirement of language, but reduced the artistic characteristics. But it is still like dragon.

Let's see the character "Boat" in old Small Seal script:

It is like a boat. How about the character in clerical script:

It is changed a lot, but still some alike the one in small seal script.

OK, now we know the original "Dragon" 龍,and "Boat" 舟. What did I do? I modified 龍,and put the two characters together

I intentionally extended the right bottom stroke of 龍 to form a boat-like stroke, and changed the middle horizontal stroke to diagonal to form oar-like stroke in character 舟. With three 舟's,the whole work looks like dragon boat racing picture.

The work was changed again to become the following after one year of the creation of the one above.

The major change is the middle stroke of 舟,extended and crossed the horizontal stroke of 龍,puting the oars into the water. So whole work is more like a dragon boat race.

Pictographic Chinese Calligraphy (1) Fly - 飛

(Copyright rights reserved for all posts in this blog. Please contact me if you want to use for profit activity)

Chinese character is from the following Shell Bone script character:

It is a picture of bird. Ancient Chinese used "Bird" to indicate the "Fly".

As time past, the character changed to

Which is traditional Chinese, one 升 (Rise, or Rising), plus two birds

Then, simplified to

Which is only a bird left, but it is like flying.

I modified it to

Which is a flying bird in the sky. It is a combination of character and picture. I called it as picto-calligraphy.
